Why I applied to Brighton University for Fine Art

I talk in my personal statement about how exciting I find it that there are so many different mediums in art to express different concepts, ideas and feelings – something I cannot wait to do at University. I chose Fine Art: Critical Practice as I am extremely excited by the range of mediums available, ranging from skills I have never tried before (such as instillation), developing skills I am just starting to learn (such as video), to perfecting skills I have been using for years (such as drawing and photography). Expressing each idea in different mediums is a key element in art for me, as I think it helps you to get a better understanding of the objects or ideas you are working from – when drawing or painting you begin to really understand the tones and shades of the colours (which I found especially in my reflective surfaces boards), but when videoing or making an installation piece you really begin to see the depth and the 3D aspects. I think it is only when you have combined all of these skills that you begin to fully comprehend, and fully bring to life the concept you are creating. I have found many times that my final pieces are very design orientated, which reflects what I have said above – after exploring the concept through different mediums I believe you can understand the feel, mood and atmosphere of the idea which allows you to get creative when representing it, because as long as you have produced the feeling you can be as abstract or realistic as you like, as others will begin to understand your concept as certain emotions and thoughts are created when looking at the final piece if you have made sure to carefully construct the atmosphere within it.

I chose Brighton University as coming from a seaside town I think I will feel at home here, as the sea is something that I have explored in many of my pieces. I was also impressed with its score in the Guardian University Guide, and also the second year placements that are available as I think they will be crucial in learning skills for after university. I am also very interested in learning about the theory side of art, from historical to contemporary as this is something I have only done in small amounts on my Alevel course. Researching art is something I thoroughly enjoy as I think it can have profound effects on your practice as you not only learn new techniques but also find styles and ideas that resonate with you. I am also extremely excited by the range of facilities on offer, especially having the opportunity to use a dark room and try animation software, things I would not have the opportunity to try elsewhere. I think my practice and my communication skills could really improve at Brighton, meaning after university I would have the skills in order to start a career and make my mark on the art world.
